Growing A Brush Cherry Bonsai In Your Garden

4300752014 9378bb8e75 m Growing A Brush Cherry Bonsai In Your Garden

The Brush Cherry can add wonderful color as well as interest to your garden. This evergreen shrub will enhance your gardening efforts by yielding puffy white flowers along with round berries all in contrast with it’s glossy leaves which can have a lovely red tint.

The Brush Cherry Bonsai is an evergreen shrub that loves a warm climate like that of it’s native Florida. They do grow best outdoors, but if you live in a cold climate and simply must have one, you can try growing one indoors provided that you can give it enough light. This shrub can grow to upwards of 35 feet in it’s natural state, but will reach a height of about 14″ as a Bonsai.

If you are thinking about planing a Brush Cherry in your garden, be sure that the winters will be mild. The tree does fine in hot weather but ideally should be grown in temperatures ranging from 46 to 68 degrees.

Plant your Brush Cherry Bonsai in a slightly acidic soil and be sure it gets plenty of water in summer months, but don’t over water it. You should give it enough so that the soil is moist, but not so much that there is standing water in the pot. Let the soil dry between waterings. Bonsais love humidity so you might want to mist your plant and use a humidity tray. The bonsai should be set on top of the humidity tray so that it collects water that drains from the freshly watered bonsai.

Fertilize your Brush Cherry Bonsai every two weeks during the summer and a couple of times over the winter. The best type of fertilizer to use is an organic liquid fertilizer such as a seaweed fertilizer or fish emulsion. If you use a chemical fertilizer make sure you dilute it to half strength.

Pruning should be done with care and kept to the summer months. Pinch the leaves with your fingers and try not to use sharp objects like sheers on your Bonsai. Your Bonsai should be wired during the active growing season. Don’t forget to prune the roots as well, the Brush Cherry can survive quite well even with a two thirds loss of roots so you can be a bit aggressive in this task, however you want to be sure not to prune them too much when repotting as this can cause a negative reaction.

Bonsais should be repotted every two years, and the Brush Cherry is no exception. Repotting should be done in early spring and the plant should be watered thoroughly and kept in the shade for several weeks after repotting to help the roots grow into the new pot.

Although it is fairly hardy, pests can be a problem with the Brush Cherry especially the Caribbean fruit fly, aphids, red spider mites, meal bugs, and scales. You should treat your Bonsai with organic pesticides and insecticides and be sure to inspect it regularly for pests and other disease.

To add the finishing touch to your beautiful Brush Cherry Bonsai, think about adding moss to the pot which will help improve moisture retention as well as add to the beauty of this fun garden plant.

How to care for a jade plant

5010670249 cf20e4a96b m How to care for a jade plant

The jade plant is easy to care for, and makes a delightful addition to any room. With its plump, shiny dark-green leaves, twisting branches and sturdy trunk, the jade plant resembles an Asian bonsai, and will live for many years under the right conditions. In maturity, the jade plant produces delightful white flowers that have a sweet fragrance and are edible. I’ve seen jade plants over twenty-five years old that have attained the height and appearance of small trees. Placed in a glazed Chinese pot, jade plants of this stature lend an air of dignity and prosperity to your home.

POTTING: Place your jade plant in a well-drained pot with a circumference that is twice as large as the crown (top) of the plant. Fill with a cactus potting blend enriched with a couple scoops of regular houseplant soil. Tamp the soil down firmly around the root ball, and cover the stem about one inch above the roots. Water thoroughly. Allow the jade plant to become root-bound as it matures, and re-pot it when the crown becomes twice as large as the circumference of the pot.

WATERING: The jade plant is a succulent, and needs water in order to thrive. When the soil is completely dry, water until liquid seeps out of the drainage holes in the pot. Use tap water that has been allowed to sit for twenty-four hours. If you are able to collect rain water, this is best for the jade plant. Avoid splashing water on the leaves, as this may leave unattractive brown spots. Check water frequently if the jade plant sits near a source of air or heat.

LIGHT: A south-facing window is the best place for a jade plant, although it will do well as long as it receives several hours of bright sunlight each day. Allow the plant to get close to the window without touching the surface of the glass, because extreme heat or cold may cause damage to the leaves. Rotate the jade plant frequently to stimulate even growth of all the branches and leaves. If you are able to take the jade plant outside in warm weather, it will thrive on fresh air and sunshine. Just make sure not to let it scorch in direct sunlight, as this will cause shriveling and dropping of the leaves.

TEMPERATURE: The jade plant can tolerate temperatures that range from very cool to very warm. In cool weather, the jade may be left outdoors until the temperature dips below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. In warm weather, the jade will thrive outdoors as long as it is not exposed to scorching sunlight, or allowed to dry out too much. Kept indoors,

Pretty Ideas

Giving a gift is an art form that has been handed down through the generations and takes a great deal of thought if you dont want it to end up in the re-gifting pile. Giving an inappropriate gift is almost as bad as giving no gift at all so take some time to consider what that special person may love to have.
Flowers and chocolates are a favorite and not only with the women but do a little research to find out what the flowers, and their colors, mean. Yes, some flowers come with hidden meanings and you dont want to give the wrong impression do you?
For example, roses have always been a firm favorite but did you realize that each color denotes a special meaning? Yellow, although favored by many to their sweethearts, actually stands for friendship. Red has become the color of love and passion. White stands for purity or innocent feelings but beware, red and white flowers should not be sent to someone sick, especially in a hospital, because it is said to denote blood and bandages!
Surprisingly, some sites also offer flower bouquets amongst their usual gifts of musical and jewelry boxes. Sending a big bunch of sunny yellow sunflowers will show adoration to the recipient. A bouquet of yellow and white lilies could be seen to represent an enthusiastic, but innocent and sincere feeling towards the recipient.

The list is virtually endless and so are the combinations of flowers on offer. All sell at reasonable prices, are delivered to the door and some have been discounted.
Of course, something else surprising is that some sites offer bonsai trees. These miniature trees, identical to their full size cousins, have been carefully pruned and pampered to give an exact replica of the full size tree. The beauty of such a gift is that they are not too difficult to look after, and they can be placed on an office desk to bring a touch of nature into the workplace. Many would love to own one of these trees but are sometimes put off by the thought that they may be too expensive or difficult to maintain. This is a myth on both counts and they are growing ever popular as a gift idea.
Another perennial favorite, adored by old and young alike, are music boxes. These tend to be treasured for years and can be handed down through the family. There is a wide selection here including childrens music boxes.
Imagine that special little girl receiving a beautifully crafted, heart shaped jewelry box that she can decorate herself. This kit, with all the trimmings for her to enjoy, has a great finishing touch. Open the lid and there is a dancing ballerina! This, of course, is the more traditional style box but with the modern twist that will delight children everywhere.
Traditional music boxes are many and varied but some have that extra touch of class. Take a look at the Thomas Kincade collection. These musical boxes are highly collectable and will certainly become a family favorite. Most are limited editions which will make them even more collectable and they have several theme tunes. Try giving one with a Christmas theme which has twelve different songs that play in rotation. Children and adults alike will absolutely love the festive scenes and will be able to sing along with those old familiar songs.
Many boxes can be customized with the tune of your choice. Modern favorites like A Whole New World, Beauty and the Beast or Can You Feel the Love tonight are available as well as the old favorites like Chestnuts Roasting, Beautiful Dreamer or Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. For those of you who want to be patriotic America the Great is also available.
Several styles of jewelry are also acceptable; one being a sterling silver or gold key chain which comes in the form of a saw; great for the handyman in your life or for that very special woman who is doing it for herself! Try another unusual piece of jewelry; the gold microphone pendant. This is rather a unique piece ideal for anyone who does public speaking or DJ-ing. Even double clef earrings are available again for the musically minded perhaps. Indeed, there should be a piece of jewelry to fit almost any profession or past-time you care to mention. Yes, the choice is that good!
The choice doesnt end there either. If you have a daughter or young female relative, there is a great collection of bags etc to choose from. One comes complete with a matching raglan sleeved t-shirt in pretty shades of pink and white with a cute flower girl design on the front. Of course there are many other bags and back packs available but this one looks rather sweet since the two items match each other perfectly. The good thing about giving a gift like this is that even when she has outgrown the shirt, she will still have the bag to treasure for some time to come.
I suppose it can be said that if you take a little time and trouble, you will find that something special for that someone special in your life. The problem lies in the choosing of the gift though. If you are given so much choice you will be hard pressed to decide on which one will be your favorite gift. Help is still at hand though because if you fail to make that choice, gift vouchers are the answer. They come in many values ranging from about $25 up to $1,000 and can be sent direct to your recipient. This too, would make a wonderful surprise. Just think about the hours of enjoyment that can be spent poring over the web pages trying to pick this or that which will delight many. Great for you too if you are not gift minded or simply dont have the time to trudge around the shops looking for ideas.

Serissa Bonsai Trees are Easier Than you Might Think

3131917875 26ce585f99 m Serissa Bonsai Trees are Easier Than you Might Think

Serissa bonsai (serissa foetida) information and care

Serissas make excellent bonsai with the right care and shaping. They are an evergreen shrub native to China, Japan, and Indochina (Southeast Asia) where it may be found growing in the woods and wet fields. The serissa foetida has small oval leaves which are slightly larger than the serissa japonica’s. It may erupt with small white flowers several times per year giving it the nickname the “thousand star” serissa. Additionally, it naturally grows surface roots and an interesting bark pattern on the trunk which give them the desirable appearance of age.

Along with junipers this is one of the most common bonsai trees for beginners. Unfortunately this has also led to them getting a bad reputation for being easy to picky and easy to kill. With the right care this is not the case.

Serissa care

The most important thing learn about serissa bonsai is that they do not like change. They also do not like extremes. If a serissa bonsai is unhappy it lets you know by dropping its leaves and flowers.

Watering

Keeping your serissa watered properly is the most important part of its care. If you over or underwater your serissa it will lose its leaves. Serissas do not tolerate drying out and the shock may kill them. You should keep the soil moist but not wet or soggy. They also like a humid environment. We recommend that you place a humidity tray under its pot to create an area of humidity around the tree. Occasionally misting the leaves when the tree is not in bloom will also help. If you purchased the bonsai tree from a store that does not specialize in bonsai it may not be potted in the correct soil. Repotting your serissa in a well draining bonsai soil bonsai soil will help make it harder to overwater your serissa bonsai.

Light

Serissa can be grown indoors or outdoors. If kept outdoors a mix of full and partial sun in most zones will be fine. If kept indoors it can do well under fluorescent lighting, but keeping it in a room where it can get indirect light from an open window and supplementary fluorescent lighting tends to work best. If the serissa does not get enough light its growth may not be compact enough to give it a nice bonsai appearance.

Special care should be taken when bringing the plant indoors after it has been living outside or outside if it has been growing indoors. As noted earlier, serissa do not like change. If it had been growing in a sunny area try gradually moving it into a shadier location before bringing it indoors. Additionally, make sure the indoor location receives a good amount of light. If you use a grow light it may need to be left on for 12 hours per day. If the tree was indoors move it into a shadier outdoor area before moving it to a very sunny spot.

Temperature

The serissa grows in USDA zones 7-11 and hardiness range 8A to 9B. However, serissa may not survive freezing temperatures and will lose their leaves when the temperate approaches freezing. If you live in an area with a cold winter you may want to take precautions or bring the tree inside when the temperatures begin to fall below 50 degrees F.

When you should repot

Serissa should be repotted during their growing season which is in spring. You should do this every 1-2 years when the tree is younger. Use a bonsai soil that holds moisture, but drains easily without remaining soggy. The leaves and roots tend to smell pretty bad when you prune them. This is normal.

Styling

Serissa tend to be pretty flexible on styles they can be trained into. They can be grown into informal upright, informal broom, oak style, and semi-cascade. They do not work very well as formal upright and formal broom. You can use the clip and grow method or wire on these trees. Wiring allows for more intricate designs. Serissa are often used in Chinese Penjing landscapes.
